Sylvia's last night out was on Friday the 8th of May, 2015, in what was an absolute war. Going toe-to-toe with the #1 ranked super flyweight in the Philippines, Marnelle Verano (now 6-2-1), for the vacant Women's International Boxing Association World super flyweight title. On a card filled with lots of local talent, including the Australian Middleweight Champ Dwight Ritchie, the Victorian Super Welterweight Champ Anthony Buttigieg and the WBC Asian Boxing Council Continental Super Welterweight Champ Ben Capps, the two ladies looked at home in the ring, providing what was considered to be the most entertaining bout of the night; reinforcing the fact that women's boxing is as equally entertaining as its traditional male counterpart.
Originally training out of Tarneit Boxing Gym, following the bout with Verano, Sylvia has since opted to change camps, and begin training with the hottest young trainer on the market, Darcy Ellis. Ellis is the youngest trainer in Australia, yet has the skill, boxing knowledge and experience of his late uncle, Keith Ellis Jr (Australian Boxing Trainer of the Century) and his father Lester Ellis combined. When questioned on her new trainer, and how she has developed under the new format of training Sylvia stated that she feels as if she is "transitioning into a well-rounded and smarter boxer, one who is no longer limited to what she thought she could and could not do". When asked on what Sylvia thought of Ellis as a trainer, she is quoted as saying that "his passion, attitude, patience, and knowledge astounds me every session. He has an exceptional ability to simplify all elements of the art in a logical and systematic manner. He is a positive perfectionist, if that makes sense, so absolutely everything we do is with purpose and the process is a really positive and enjoyable one".
With her next bout being fought on Team Ellis' upcoming show "Once Upon A Time At The Melbourne Pavilion" on April the 22nd, Scharper is readying for a big 2016. With a new trainer at the helm, Sylvia is likely looking forward to April the 22nd to solidify herself as one of Australia's hottest prospects in the boxing scene. Her trainer, Darcy Ellis, believes that Sylvia's work ethic and commitment to her craft is like no other, stating that "her eagerness to learn is second to none, and I’ve been fortunate as a trainer to train a fighter who puts all their trust in me as I do them. I have always been a fan of hers and admire the courage she displays in all her bouts. There’s no doubt in my mind Sylvia is going to do her family, Team Ellis, and most importantly herself proud come fight night."
All ticketing information on Sylvia's upcoming fight at the Melbourne Pavilion on April the 22nd will be released shortly on the Team Ellis Facebook page!
